What to Expect?:
With Matt Cain coming back and Madison Bumgarner becoming the ace of the staff, the Giants should have even more pitching strength.  Losing the power of Sandoval's bat could slow the offense but the pitching and solid defense should keep the opposition's run production low and keep the team in a lot of close games.
Why Should You Root for These Guys?:
As a Phillies and Dodgers fan, having seen this team win three titles this decade it pains me to have to find a reason to root for the hated ones.  Still,  this organization is in the middle of a winning era that has not been seen since Bill Terry-Mel Ott-Carl Hubbell days.  In fact this group is probably even more successful than the Terry group and you would really need to go back to the McGraw-Mathewson days to find a Giants group this successful.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Giants Fans Want?:
The pitching depth past Cain-Bumgarner has some questions. It was great to see Jake Peavey win a title and Tim Lincecum still has flashes of greatness.  The problem is the inconsistency of those two.  What happens if they don't perform the way they did last year?
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
For the last few years the Giants have seen big power numbers from Pablo Sandoval at third base.  His replacement this year will be Casey McGehee.  Casey is a solid bat in the lineup but he is not going to replace the numbers that Sandoval had.
Expect Great Things From:
Speaking of the McGraw-Mathewson era, Buster Posey is the best Catcher this team has had since Chief Meyers or Roger Bresnahan in the 1900s and 1910s.  Posey is a special player and when all is said and done his name will be among the greatest for an organization that has some of the greatest of all time.
Is This His Last Chance?:
After winning the World Series it would be tough to put anyone in this category.  Winning solves a lot of problems and gets a lot of people off the hook.
Prediction:1st in NL West.

With no Kemp, Hanley or Gordon have the Dodgers just gotten old and slow?
What to Expect?:
As much as I hate to say it, Dodgers fans should expect a step back. The top three pitchers of Kershaw/Greinke/Ryu are still very strong but who is the vocal leader of this team?  Without Kemp to lead the team who will step up and get in the guys faces when it is needed?  Adrian Gonzalez and Clayton Kershaw are great but neither give the impression of a fiery leader.  Jimmy Rollins was that guy in Philadelphia but that was an environment where he was the veteran of the organization and had the organizational reputation of the cornerstone of the franchise.
Why Should You Root for These Guys?:
As much as people love to hate the Dodgers because of the perceived "buying a pennant" attitude, the Dodgers have not won since Kirk Gibson shocked Eckersley in 1988.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Dodgers Fans Want?:
This team has an odd dynamic.  In losing Dee Gordon, Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez they have lost a big part of their identity.  They will need someone to step up and take the place of Kemp as the vocal leader.  Add to that the question of closer as Jansen is already dealing with injuries.   Although Dodgers fans are expecting a top of the division team they could be in for a sucker punch to the gut.
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
Jimmy Rollins is a Hall of Fame Shortstop an is without question the best Shortstop the Phillies ever had.  He was the leader of one of the most successful stretches in the team's history and will go down in history as one of the two greatest Phillies of all time.  Yet, at this point in his career he is on the down side.  You can expect him to be a fierce competitor and possibly even an All Star representative but don't expect him to be an MVP candidate.
Expect Great Things From:
This is a tough one to pick.  I could go with Adrian Gonzalez or Howie Kendrick or even Puig.  But of course the top pitcher on the planet, Clayton Kershaw, will be the star of this team.  Even with all the offensive power, you can count on Kershaw to carry this team on his miracle arm.
Is This His Last Chance?:
Andre Ethier had tremendous potential when he came up to the Dodgers.  He was good looking.  Likable.  He arrived when the Dodgers were bringing up their young crop of talent.  For whatever reason he has not been able to reach his potential under Mattingly.  His name has constantly come up in trade rumors (even back to the deal that brought Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford.  With Kemp being shuffled off to San Diego, you would think that Ethier would get the start in center field but the Dodgers picked up Chris Heisey in the off season and are expecting Joc Pederson to start in Center field.  Ethier may start to get the hint that his days in LA are numbered.

What to Expect?:
The Padres were active this offseason.  Extremely active and added plenty of big names, taking one of the biggest from a division rival.   Padres fans should expect this team to compete but a World Series is too high of a goal.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Padres Fans Want?:
It is true the Padres added some very big names this offseason but if you look at where they were added fans may pause.  Matt Kemp (OF), Wil Meyers (OF), Justin Upton (OF).  That's great but the team already had expensive free agent Carlos Quentin, young and amazingly talented Cameron Maybin, Max Venable and Abraham Almonte in a a crowded  outfield.  So the outfield is strong.  Can any of them play third base or turn a double play?
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
James Shields earned his nickname "Big Game James" by winning in big situations for Tampa Bay and Kansas City.  Coming off the Royals' magical post season run, every team wanted Shields.  You can expect Shields to be a leader on this staff and to pitch with everything he has but expect results more like his first year in Kansas City than the results last year.
Expect Great Things From:
Matt Kemp is a 5-tool player.  Any success the Dodgers had over the last 10 years was directly tied to Kemp.  Unfortunately, quite a few of the disappointments were linked to him too.  He has had an up and down career as far as the public perception of his hustle, leadership and attitude.  He won't be chasing a triple crown like he did in 2011 but he will be a leader on this team.
Is This His Last Chance?:
Josh Johnson was once expected to be an ace in Miami and even when Mark Buerhle was brought on board the Marlins' sinking ship, Johnson some still considered the top guy.  A poor relationship with Ozzie Guillien led to his departure from Miami to Toronto for a failed season.  Injuries slowed him last year and will delay his participation this year.  Johnson may not have many opportunities left to regain his form.
Prediction: 3rd place in NL West. Second Wild Card

What to Expect?:
Expectations coming into last season were gigantic.  The team had competed with the Dodgers in 2013 and had added Mark Trumbo. The results from the start were a disaster.  So after a successful season followed by a disaster where should expectations lie?  Considering Patrick Corbin and Bronson Arroyo are both out until midseason and they are working under a young an inexperienced manager, expectations should be low.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Diamondback Fans Want?:
The talent level on this team is low.  They have some truly All Star capable players in Yasmany Tomas, Paul Goldschmidt and Mark Trumbo but there are a lot of holes on this team starting with the pitching.
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
With Tanaka in New York, Tony Abreu in Chicago and Puig in Los Angeles, the international market has given us some players who made immediate impacts in the league.  Diamondback fans are hoping Yasmany Tomas will have the same impact.  He will be a great player in this league but don't expect him to spark a playoff run in Arizona.
Expect Great Things From:
Paul Goldschmidt is now a two time All-Star.  A Gold Glove winner.  A Silver Slugger.  An MVP runner up. He has a ton of talent.  In fact, when all is said and done, he may be one of the best players the Diamondbacks organization ever produced.  Enjoy seeing him in an Arizona uniform for as long as possible.
Is This His Last Chance?:
Bronson Arroyo was a big free agent signing last year but it did not go well for him.  Injuries limited his time and results on the mound and he will begin the year out of action.  He has had a very successful career, winning a World Series with the Red Sox and helping the Reds return to a contending teams in the last decade.  Unfortunately, father time may have caught up with him.
Prediction: 4th in NL West

What to Expect?:
Keep expectations low.  Terribly low.  This is not a good team and the problem is there is not much hope for the immediate future.  This team will likely fight with Philadelphia, Atlanta and Arizona for the bottom spot.
Why Should You Root for These Guys?:
There is talent on this team.  Tulowitzki, Cargo and Charlie Blackmon are among the top of that list. Unfortunately for those three there is little else around them.  If you like rooting for the Cinderella Story, this is where you would find it.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Rockies Fans Want?:
If we're being honest it won't. There is not enough talent on this team to compete with San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
Charlie Blackmon was one of the stand out performers for the Rockies last year.  He is a potential All Star but with the state of the Rockies that also makes him a potential All Star for another team.
Expect Great Things From:
Troy Tulowitzki is probably this franchise's greatest player in their short history and only Todd Helton would make it close.  It would be silly for this team to trade him when they held on to Helton so long.  Tulo should retire as Mr. Rockies.
Is This His Last Chance?:
Carlos Gonzales had a great year in 2010 but his production since then has not matched the expectations.  His potent bat could make him trade bait and he may be gone by midseason.
Prediction:5th in NL West

Answer to Last Week's Question:

Adam Wainwright led the league in wins in both 2009 and 2013.  In 2006 six pitchers tied for the lead in wins with 16.  Among those were Aaron Harang of the Reds and Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs.  2004 was the last time a pitcher from the division led the league by themselves.  In that year Roy Oswalt of the Astros won 20 games.

What to Expect?:
The Dodgers have a surplus of All Star outfielders.  That would seem to be a plus but last year they said they had a surplus of starting pitchers yet they somehow were scrambling for starters at the trade deadline.  The question this year is what they can expect from the outfielders and whether they should expect a repeat of the success of last year.  Ethier, Crawford and Kemp all seem to have health issues and Puig seems to be a bit immature at times.  The pitching rotation of Kershaw, Greinke and Ryu is set at the top and the signing of Haren and Maholm gives them some depth.  Both Beckett and Billingsley are hoping to come back healthy.  Billingsley says he feels like his recovery has given him a brand new arm.  Expect this team to be on top all season long and be the favorite coming out of the National League at the end of the year.
Why Should You Root for These Guys?:
There is a perception that the Dodgers are buying themselves a championship and it is true that many of the key players came via major trades.  Realistically the Dodgers have many players who are home grown.  Billingsley, Kemp, Ethier, A.J. Ellis and Kershaw all came of age with the Dodgers.  True this team has spent money the last two years but many of the players have suffered through tough times with the previous ownership.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Dodgers Fans Want?:
The Dodgers have a strong outfield, a strong pitching rotation and half of a good infield.  Their main problem spots are coming from Second Base, Third Base and the bullpen.  The Dodgers signed Brendan Harris from the Rangers but he has been inconsistent and the backup of Dee Gordon has not been the success the team had hoped.  The team will start the season with unproven Alex Guerrero at second but Harris and Gordon will compete for the job as well.  Juan Uribe is back at third and the fans will always remember his huge Home Run in the playoffs but  Uribe's regular season numbers with the Dodgers had fans booing right up until the end of the regular season.  The bull pen remains a question and was a big reason they were not able to win it all last year.  Also, don't forget the rift between Mattingly and ownership over the long term contract.  On the surface this has healed but it could still be simmering behind closed doors.
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
Matt Kemp has been a big part of the success of the Dodgers since he came into the league in 2006.  Unfortunately, injuries took a major toll last year.  When Kemp missed time with injuries Puig stepped in and took over.  Kemp will still be a big contributor and leader to any success the Dodgers have but don't expect him to challenge for a Triple Crown the way he did a few years ago.
Expect Great Things From:
Clayton Kershaw is one of the best pitchers in the league and is clearly the ace of the staff.  Just behind him is Zach Greinke.  These two have a long way to go before they see comparisons to Koufax and Drysdale but having two top line starters at the front of the rotation is a help.  Hyun Jin Ryu had a bit of a slow start in his first month (although he pitched better than his record) and he became one of the most consistent players on the team.  Expect these three to keep the Dodgers at the top of the division, regardless of the rest of the rotation.
Is This His Last Chance?:
Entering the 2012 season Dan Haren looked almost unhittable in the preseason.  With the high expectations for the Halos that year it was expected that Haren and Weaver would take the Angels to the promised land.  Haren immediately suffered from back problems and spent time on the DL for the first time in his career.  Since then Haren has struggled.  He was expected to help the Nationals in 2013 but health again played a part  Haren will need to find his old form if the Dodger are going to take the next step.
Prediction:1st in NL West

What to Expect?:
The Giants had a season that left their fans saying "what the hell just happened?"  They defended their World Series win with a shocking fall from the playoffs.  Cain, Bumgarner, Lincecum and Vogelsong all fell off.  The Giant's have not added much to the team but expect them to bounce back to the competitive form of the previous few years.
Why Should You Root for These Guys?:
The Giants have a long and proud history dating back to the start of the National League.  The history stretches long before the 1950's move to San Francisco and includes such luminaries in the history of the game like Mays, McCovey, Ott, Terry, McGraw and Mathewson.  Besides, it is always great to have the Giants and Dodgers battling for the top spot.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Giants Fans Want?:
The pitching staff had a disastrous season last year (making it two years in a row for Lincecum).  The strength of the World Series Championship teams came solely from the success of the pitching staff.  If Cain, Baumgarner and Vogelsong struggle again it could be a long season.
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
Tim Hudson has been a strong presence in playoff team rotations since the early 2000's starting with the A's and then the Braves.  Hudson was having a good year again last year but suffered a gruesome injury late in the season.  Hudson turns 39 in July and overcoming an injury of that sort is not as easily done at his age  Hudson is projected as the fourth starter so the pressure will be less but don't expect more more than about 10 wins.
Expect Great Things From:
Buster Posey is a special type of player.  A catcher who is great defenisvely, hits for average and hits for power.  There had been talks of Posey moving to first but the Giants have denied that and Giants fans should be happy he is staying put behind the plate.  Posey is one of the best Catchers of this generation.  His numbers were down slightly last year but expect Posey to bounce back this year and lead the Giants to the playoffs again.
Is This His Last Chance?:
Tim Lincecum is a two time Cy Young winner and finished in the top ten in voting two additional times.  He made 4 All Star Teams and even pitched a no hitter last year.  Unfortunately what looked like the start to a Hall of Fame career has turned into a game by game proposition.  Lincecum was given a new two year contract but the Giants seem to have lost patience with his struggles.
Prediction:2nd in NL West.  Wild Card

What to Expect?:
Arizona surprised a lot of people last year by staying in contention late into the final month and it was due mostly to Paul Goldschmidt and Patrick Corbin.  The team has made only two major additions in Mark Trumbo and Bronson Arroyo and may have overachieved last year.  Expect them to stay towards the middle of the division and possibly challenge for the final wild card spot but with a talented Dodgers and Giants team in this division don't expect a lot.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Diamondback Fans Want?:
The talent level outside of a few players is just not there.  Corbin, Goldschmidt and Prado are great but Corbin is now out for the season.  Trumbo has flashes of greatness but there is always a question of adjustment in switching leagues (ask B.J. Upton and Albert Pujols).The Diamondbacks are not a terrible team but they are not in the same league as the top teams.
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
Mark Trumbo was perceived to be on the verge of becoming a star in the American League if only the Angels didn't have so many Angels in the outfield.  Trumbo was tried at third base for awhile but that was a disaster.  He was moved to first base when Pujols was out but his best numbers came from the DH spot.  There is nowhere Trumbo can hide in the NL and he will need to improve his defense.  By the end of the year Trumbo should start to come around but his first few months may be a rough transition.
Expect Great Things From:
Paul Goldschmidt seemed to have it all figured out last year.  After showing some major flashes of potential in the previous years Goldschmidt finally had an MVP caliber year.  Expect him to continue that growth and become a star in the league.
Is This His Last Chance?:
Bronson Arroyo has been with the Reds since 2006.  He came to Cincinnati after a successful run with the Red Sox as part of the 2004 World Series team.  His time with the Reds was an up and down experience but as Cueto, Latos and Bailey moved their way to the top of the rotation, Arroyo found himself falling towards the back of it.  Arroyo could add a great veteran presence for some of the younger players but entering his 15th year in the Majors could mean he is on his way out.
Prediction: 3rd in NL West

What to Expect?:
The Padres are still working to build a winner and they certainly have some great pieces in place.  The pitching rotation has potential to surprise a lot of people but they are not quite on the level of the Giants and Dodgers.  The Padres, if healthy, have an outside shot to be able to stay in the Wild Card race late into the season but it is a very long shot that they will finish in a playoff spot.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Padres Fans Want?:
The pitching staff has a lot of potential to surprise but the inconsistent arms could also lead to a big disappointment.  Last year, with a lot of these same pieces in place, the Padres looked poised to jump up in the division and when the Dodgers and Giants got off to slow starts they had a window to build a lead.  Instead the Rockies and Diamondbacks fought their way to the top and the Padres just fought the Dodgers.
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
Huston Street has had some amazing seasons as a closer, especially during his time in Colorado.  The problem in San Diego is not that his skills have diminished but his opportunities to save will be diminished.
Expect Great Things From:
Chase Headley was set to have a great year in 2013 but jammed his shoulder early in the season and he never quite got going until September. Headley looks to be starting the season in the same way this year and any chance the Padres have of winning rides with Headley.
Is This His Last Chance?:
Josh Johnson became a center of controversy during his last year in Miami.  Ozzie Guillien questioned why he was being praised for being average when he had the potential to be great.  Johnson, and the rest of the Marlins, ended that season terribly but it was hoped that a change in scenery to Toronto last year would help.  It didn't.  Johnson was unable to fulfill his potential there.  If the Padres hope to have a chance at the playoffs and if Johnson hopes to continue his career he will need to show he is capable of reaching his potential.
Prediction:4th place in NL West

What to Expect?:
The Rockies were surprisingly not terrible last year and even stayed competitive to the all star break.  They have now lost several of their main stars including Todd Helton and Dexter Fowler.  The replacements of Justin Morneau and Drew Stubbs are not terrible but they are not likely to have the same impact as the players they are replacing.  With a strong Dodgers and Giants team in this division and a competitive Diamondbacks group expect the Rockies to sink back to the bottom of the division this year.
Why Should You Root for These Guys?:
These guys are the small market underdog in the big market division.  The Giants and Dodgers can out spend this team  any day and have done so.  The Rockies have built their team (mostly) from the ground up.  They still have a big mountain to climb before competing with the big boys.
Why Might This Season Not Turn Out the Way Rockies Fans Want?:
Simple.  They just don't have the talent.  There was a perception at the winter meetings that the Rockies were very active, and they were.  The problem is that the moves they made did not add anyone who could change the organization.
Don't Expect Too Much From Him:
During the early 2000's, as the Twins organization rebuilt itself Justin Mourneau had a huge part in that success, even winning an MVP award.  Since then he has suffered greatly with the effects of concussions which have decreased his playing time and his productivity.  Mourneau is healthy now and should be productive but don't expect him to win another MVP award.
Expect Great Things From:
2013 was the exact opposite of 2012 for Troy Tulowitzki.   In 2012 Tulo fought through injuries and missed the greater part of the season.  A healthy 2013 led to a great season for Tulo with 25 HR, 80 RBI and a .312 average.  In fact it was one of his best seasons of his career so far.  Look for Tulo to improve on that great season.
Is This His Last Chance?:
LaTroy Hawkins has been pitching in the major leagues since 1995.  He has had a great career but at 40 years old Hawkins has yet to play for a World Series team.  He signed a one year deal with Colorado but it is not likely that the Rockies will get him the ring.
Prediction:5th in NL West

TRIVIA QUESTION:

With three teams in this division less than 50 years old there is a perception that this division is under represented in the World Series.  Since the start of three division play in 1994 how many times has the National League Champion come from the National League West?

Answer to Last Week's Question:

The Cubs last won the World Series in 1908, although the Tinker, Evers and Chance era Cubs made it back to the World Series in 1910.  With Evers missing action due to a fractured ankle the A's won easily 4 games to 1.  The Cubs would not return to the World Series until they lost to the Red Sox in 1918,  Another eleven year gap between appearances led to another loss as Hack Wilson was blamed for a 10 run inning that turned the tide towards the A's and 4-1 series loss in 1929.  1932 saw the Cubs swept out of the World Series by Ruth, Gehrig and the Yankees. 1935 saw Hank Greenberg and the Tigers beat the Cubs in revenge for the 1907 and 1908 losses.  In 1938 they were swept again by DiMaggio and the Yankees. 1945 saw them lose again to Hank Greenberg and the Tigers, this time in seven games and the famous curse was cast.  The Cubs would wait nearly 40 years before getting their next chance at the post season as 1984 saw Leon Durham get the blame for a team collapse against the Padres in the NLCS.  Five years later Andre Dawson would lead the Cubs to the 1989 NLCS only to lose to the Giants.  Sammy Sosa led the Cubs to the 1998 NLDS but the Cubs were swept by the Braves. Five more years in between appearances led to 2003's debacle with Steve Bartman getting the blame.  The 2007 Cubs surprised many people by winning their division but could not advance past the first round.  The 2008 Cubs had the best record in the National League but fell to Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers.  2008 was their 12th appearance since the 1910 loss to the Athletics.

Forgiving Baseball's Scapegoats: Leon Durham

Writers can be very competitive creatures.  They all need to come up with the headline that captures your attention.  Through this competition many of the great plays in history become known by a specific name.  Bobby Thomson's Home Run became the "Shot Heard Round the World".  Enos Slaughter's run around the bases became known as "Enos Slaughter's mad dash".  The focus of this week's article has come to be known simply as "Bull's Ole".

It had been quite some time since the Cubs had been in the post season.  39 years to be exact.  In fact, they had not reached the postseason since 1945 when the owner of the Billy Goats Tavern had been asked to remove his goat from the 1945 World Series and cursed the team.  So when the Cubs won the National League East over the heavily favored Cardinals and Phillies as well as the improving New York Mets, Chicago came alive.

Chitown saw this as a team of destiny.  They were well built from the parts of dismantled dynasties at most positions and young budding stars at others.  Ron Cey had come from the Dodgers.  Larry Bowa, Gary Matthews, Keith Moreland, Warren Brusstar, Ryne Sandberg and Bob Dernier had come from the Phillies.  Dennis Eckersley was acquired from the Red Sox for first baseman Bill Buckner.  Davey Lopes came in a late season trade from Oakland and Rick Sutcliffe came in a late season trade from Cleveland. Leon Durham had come from the Cardinals.  Very little talent was home grown but it somehow all worked together.

They took over first place on August 1 and never looked back, winning the division by 8 1/2 games.  The first two games of the NLCS were in Chicago and it looked certain that the curse had been nothing more than a joke.  Wrigley Field was a madhouse as the Cubs won the first game 13-0 and the second game 4-2.  The NLCS was a best of five until 1985 and the Cubs needed just one more win to advance to their first World Series since ten years before Disneyland existed.  They needed to win just one of the last three games against the San Diego Padres, another collection of fallen dynasties.  The Padres had Steve Garvey of the Dodgers and Graig Nettles and Goose Gossage of the Yankees.

When the Cubs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the second inning of Game 3, the Padres were expected to fold up and just be satisfied with having made the playoffs for the first time in team history.  Dennis Eckersley had allowed only 4 hits through the first 5 innings and really had no trouble to this point.  Then the bottom of the 5th came and  the Padres exploded for three runs on 4 hits.  A 4 run 6th inning finished the scoring for a 7-1 win.  It was a disappointing loss but the Cubs needed to win just one of the next two.  The Cubs again jumped out to a lead and were tied at 5 heading into the bottom of the 9th when Steve Garvey hit a two run Home Run to win the game and force a final deciding game.

Now Cubs fans were worried and talk of the curse ramped up again.  Their fears seemed to be put to rest when Leon "Bull" Durham hit a big two run Home Run in the first and Jody Davis hit a solo Home Run in the second.  Another three run lead and the Cubs were relaxed.  There was no curse.  The Cubs took the three run lead into the 6th.  San Diego scored one but couldn't get any closer

Then came the moment everyone was waiting for:  the curse roared out.  Carmelo Martinez walked to start the inning.  He was sacrificed to second base.  Tim Flannery hit a ground ball right to Durham at First base.  It moved quickly but it should have been routine.  Durham missed.  It went right through his legs.  It was a play the two time All Star had made a thousand times but for whatever reason on this ground ball it went right past him.  Martinez scored from second and the game was tied.  A single, a double, another single and three runs followed.  The Padres led 5-3.  The Cubs put runners on in each of the last two innings but none of them scored and the Padres celebrated the greatest moment in franchise history while Cubs fans pointed to Durham's error as the reason they were headed home for another cold and windy winter.

There are many reasons you cannot blame Leon Durham for the series loss.  Here are just a few:
1.  A few years ago Bob Ibach, the PR Director of the Cubs at the time, gave an interview discussing the series.  He revealed that while the Cubs were at bat in the 7th a Gatorade cooler toppled over on the Cubs bench.  One of the victims of the Gatorade was Durham's glove.  The equipment staff did their best to dry the glove using hair dryers, towels and whatever else was available.  Apparently the glove oil, tobacco juice, dirt and leather along with the sugar of the Gatorade created an adhesive.  The Cubs equipment managers did what they could to fix the glove but it was barely serviceable.  Instead of trying to break in an unfamiliar glove, Bull took the familiar glove with him out to the field.  According to Ibach Durham looked down to see if the glove would even open and that was when he lost track of the ball.

2.  The Cubs had only 5 hits in Game 5 and only 2 after the second inning.  For an offense that won 13-0 in game 1 it was a very quiet deciding game.  One of those 5 hits was a two run Home Run by Durham himself.  If it hadn't been for Durham the Cubs wouldn't have been in the game at all.

3.  The Cubs lost three straight after winning the first two games of the series.  In each of those three games they had a lead and in one they were tied late in the game.  In the final 2 games Durham hit Home Runs, one of the few Cubs players hitting.  Although he only had three hits in the five games he made them count.

4.  Durham's error allowed only one run to score.  The two singles, double and three runs that came after had nothing to do with Durham.

10 Ugliest Uniforms in Baseball History

"There is more importance attached to the selection of a regular uniform for a base ball club than the fraternity generally think there is...one of the last things a club should do, is to change the colors or form of its uniform." 

These were the words of wisdom of Henry Chadwick, one of the founding fathers of organized baseball.  Way back in 1869 Chadwick knew that the appearance of a team made a big difference in how the team is perceived by the public.  Quite often people form allegiances based on locality, but just as often, appearance of the uniform makes a big difference in choosing sides.  The eye catching colors of the Giants' black and orange, the crisp blue and white of the Dodgers, the classy look of the Tigers' olde English D, the traditional blue pinstripes of the Yankees all play a part in the image of the organization as a whole. 

Twenty years later the 1889 Spalding's Baseball Guide and Official League Book, quoted Rule #17 as stating that "Every Club shall be required to adopt uniforms for its players, and each player shall be required to present himself upon the field during said game in a neat and cleanly condition..."  Of course, Spalding's being a sporting goods company, the back of that guide to the upcoming season featured an ad urging "clubs not to make the mistake of entrusting the making of their uniforms to local dealers, whose experience in this kind of work is necessarily limited."  At that time the top quality jersey would have cost you $5.00.    That's a hell of a bargain considering a replica Josh Hamilton jersey, not the expensive authentic replica,would cost you $100 plus tax plus shipping and handling.   The 1889 Brooklyn Bridegrooms (the ancestors of the Dodgers) could have clothed their first and second nines with top quality uniforms (with some left over) for that amount.

Over the years some teams have paid particular attention to the continuity of their uniforms (the Yankees have made only minor changes to their uniforms since the early 1920's) while others seem to change every ten years or so (the Padres, Mariners, Astros and Angels were all expansion teams but have all continuously changed uniforms, color schemes and logos).

Some uniform changes are widely successful and others are disastrous.  Below are my choices for the ten ugliest uniforms in the history of the sport:

10. 1963-1974 Kansas City/Oakland Athletics
Charles Finley always tried to find new ways to draw attention to his teams.  Frequent readers will remember his antics as they were chronicled during our focus on baseball in music series.  Finley took over majority ownership of the Athletics in 1961 when they were in Kansas City.  The A's were one of the original American League teams and had used red and white or blue and white (occasionally a combination of all three) since the league began in 1901. Just a few years after Finley took over the team , in 1963, the color scheme changed drastically to Kelly Green and Canary Yellow.  The combination was usually used with a yellow shirt and white pants but as you can see from the picture of Vida Blue below, they sometimes used yellow pants with the yellow jerseys.  As ugly as these uniforms were the A's were very successful during their use.  In the time that they wore these uniforms the A's won division titles in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975 and won three straight World Series in 1972, 1973 and 1974.

9. 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates
Similar to the Athletics organization, the Pittsburgh Pirates used a varying red and white or blue and white color scheme for decades.  Although we might find it hard to believe that any team in Pittsburgh would use any color scheme other than black and gold, Pirates legends Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, Paul and Lloyd Waner and Pie Traynor never appeared in what we consider the traditional Pirates colors.  In 1946 the Pirates were purchased by a group that included the legendary entertainer Bing Crosby and two years later the team adopted the now famous black and gold.  The uniform had small variations throughout the years and were usually pretty nice looking but the 1979 "We Are Family" team used the gaudy all Canary Yellow combination seen in the below photo of Willie Stargell.  Also similar to the Oakland A's, the Pirates won the World Series the year these uniforms were used, coming back from a 3 games to 1 deficit to defeat the Baltimore Orioles.

8. 1982-1986 Chicago White Sox
This won't be the last time you see the White Sox on this list but these uniforms (seen modeled below by Pitcher Lamaar Hoyt) are definitely hideous.  It could be the font of the Sox across the chest, the odd positioning of the numbers on the leg or just the odd striping patterns that make these uniforms among the ugliest ever.  Regardless, the ChiSox won the 1983 American League West but lost in the American League Championship Series to the Baltimore Orioles.  These uniforms lasted until 1986.  They were replaced for a few years by slightly nicer uniforms with the same color scheme but with a script "White Sox" on the home jersey and "Chicago" for the away jersey.  The current black and white (a throw back to the days of the early years in the league) were debuted in 1990.

7. 2012 Miami Marlins
The Marlins have been in the league since 1993 and chose an odd Teal, Black and Gray color scheme to start off their existence.  They used variations of that color scheme until 2012 when the team had a complete overhaul.  As the team prepared to embark on a new chapter by moving into a brand new stadium with a new manager and a ton of new high priced free agents, they decided to change their uniforms and logo as well.  The team must have had little left in the budget for uniforms after the price of the stadium and payroll because the uniforms looked like a company softball uniform.  A debate can probably be started to discuss what was the bigger disaster:  the uniforms or the play on the field?

6. 1975-1986 Houston Astros
When the Houston Colt .45's renamed themselves the Astros for the 1965 season, they switched their uniforms to a fairly simple "Astros" across the chest with a shooting star across the top.  The color scheme changed from a blue and white (with hints of orange) to an orange and white combination for the 1970 season.  Starting in 1975, they apparently couldn't bring themselves to decide on just two colors because their uniform had a little bit of everything but green in it.  Amazingly, some of the greatest Astros in the history of the organization wore the rainbow uniforms.  Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, Glenn Davis and Jose Cruz all spent the best parts of their careers in hideous fashion.  The results are what matter and the Astros won.  The team reached the playoffs in 1980, 1981 and 1986. All three times they lost to the eventual World Series champions (1980 Phillies, 1981 Dodgers and 1986 Mets).

5. 1916-1917 Brooklyn Robins
We rarely see major variations of the base color of uniforms.  Throughout history home uniforms are usually solid white and road uniforms are solid gray with a logo, team name or city name across the chest.  The most common drastic difference is the pinstriped look that we see on the Yankees, Phillies or White Sox uniforms, for example. When I was recently reading up on the 1916 World Series I came across these beauties (modeled below by manager Wilbert Robinson) with the checkered pattern.  At any rate, they were only in use for two seasons but made an appearance in the 1916 World Series as the Dodgers lost to Babe Ruth and the Red Sox.

4. 1916 New York Giants
The Giants-Dodgers rivalry was in the infant stages but was rarely more vicious than at this time.  The intensity of the rivalry at this period can largely be attributed to the hatred that grew between Wilbert Robinson and John McGraw, formerly the best of friends.  Coincidence or not, the Dodgers and Giants both sported the checkered pattern uniforms during the 1916 season.  The Dodgers had success with the pattern in 1916, reaching their first World Series.  The Giants did not and switched back to their previous pinstripes in red with a gray road uniform in 1917.  Apparently there is something to the success of a uniform as they returned to the World Series for 1917.  The classic Giants black and orange (the reason Duke Snider would hate Halloween) would not come to the Giants until John McGraw had retired.  The now famous Giants colors were introduced by McGraw's replacement, Bill Terry.

3. 1972-1973 San Diego Padres
The Padres may be able to consider themselves lucky that they weren't wearing floppy shoes and red wigs but we can doubt that any of them thought it could get any worse than these uniforms.  The Padres were owned by Ray Kroc, owner of McDonald's, who decided to dress his players in the same color scheme as his hamburgers.  The all beef colored brown with the mustard colored uniforms were only used for two seasons but the color scheme remained in variations up until 1985 when they moved to a more white, brown and orange scheme.  In the picture below Don Zimmer is seen looking pensive.  Considering Zimmer has worn the Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees and Cubs classic uniforms it kind of makes you wonder how disgusted he was wearing this thing.

2. 1975 Cleveland Indians
For the second ugliest uniforms in the history of baseball it was only fitting that the image used would be one of the ugliest pictures in the history of baseball.  1975 was a monumental year for baseball.  The Big Red Machine dominated the National League.  The Red Sox, led by Fred Lynn and Jim Rice won the American League.  One of the greatest World Series of all time took seven classic games to be decided and Frank Robinson had the honor of being the first African American manager  in major league history.  Unfortunately for Frank he was manager of the Indians.   Since 1960 the franchise had finished higher than 4th only once, which was a third place finish in 1968 (21 games behind the first place Tigers).  Robby's bitter sweet appointment to the lowly Tribe can lead to the philosophical question: why do bad teams happen to great managers? Another great question would be why do bad uniforms happen at all?  The 1975 Indians had a new look roster including Robinson as the DH Player/manager and a new first baseman in Boog Powell.  Powell dressed in the uniform for the first time, looked in the mirror and told his team mates "I look like a massive blood clot."  Given Powell's size and shape he probably could have better compared himself to a ripe tomato.

1. 1976 White Sox (3 games only)
Bill Veeck was very similar to Charlie Finley in some ways: always looking for ways to get people in the seats.  He was the mastermind behind Disco Demolition night and Five Cent Beer Night.  He once decided that the player's batting average was not as important a stat as their "failure percentage" and had his scoreboard operator display the percentage of times the batter had failed to get a hit.  The players were not too happy about that one but they flat out revolted when they were forced to wear Softball style uniforms with shorts.  Comiskey Park was not always well manicured so you can imagine the fear the players would have had of trying to slide in shorts.  Fortunately for the ChiSox Comiskey realized the mistake, or realized his players would probably completely revolt if he didn't switch back to normal uniforms.  After 3 games the shorts were gone.

2013 National League West Preview

***The Division Preview that follows is not betting advice in any way shape or form.  Please do not bet any money based in any part on these predictions.***

Don't forget to also check out the AL East,  AL Central, AL West,  NL East and NL Central previews from the past three weeks.  Check back next week for the final predictions (with some updates based on injuries and spring training performances) as well as the actual playoff, World Series, MVP and Cy Young predictions.

It may be a surprise but this division has produced 6 World Series participants since the three division format began in 1995.  The six league participants were the Padres (1998), Diamondbacks (2001), Giants (2002), Rockies (2007) and Giants (2010 and 2012).  The Diamondbacks and the last two Giants teams won it all, while the 2002 Giants lost  Game 7 to the Angels.

This division has also produced some of the best rivalries in the sport.  The Giants-Dodgers has always been a great rivalry and with both teams fielding competitive teams the rivalry should be at a flash point this year. For a few years in the middle of the 2000's the Padres-Dodgers rivarly was heating up as well, as the two teams were constantly fighting each other for the top spot.  When both teams started to fall off the rivalry cooled.

Similar to the American League West and the National League East, every team has spent time in every part of the division.  The Giants (1997, 2000, 2003, 2010 and 2012) and Diamondbacks  (1999, 2001, 2002, 2007 and 2011) have won the most division titles.  They are followed closely by the Dodgers (1995, 2004, 2008 and 2009) and Padres (1996, 1998, 2005 and 2006).  The Rockies reached the World Series as a Wild Card in 2007.

This division is much more competitive than most fans give it credit for.  The Rockies are clearly at the bottom of the league and one of the worst teams in baseball.  The rest of the division is very closely contested.  The Giants always seem to come out on top despite low national expectations and the Padres and Dodgers are improving.  Here is how I see it playing out:

What to expect: 
With the exception of Melky Cabrera moving on to Toronto, this team is returning almost untouched.  That is something quite rare for a World Series Champion in today's game.  The Giants may have even upgraded over Cabrera by adding Andres Torres from the Mets.  If Lincecum is healthy and Zito can continue his resurgence the rest of the league may be chasing the Giants all summer.
Why should you root for these guys?: 
Dating all the way back to the days of John McGraw, Christy Matthewson and Roger Bresnahan's days in New York the Giants are a big part of the history of the league.  They had long runs of success from 1904-1924, 1933-1938, 1951-1962 and then a long absence from the consistently good teams everyne remembered until the early part of this century. 
Why might this season not turn out like Giants fans want?: 
Several players may have overachieved last year including Barry Zito, who overcame several seasons below expectations to win 15 games and give the Giants strong playoff pitching performances,and Marco Scutaro, who was looked at as a liability heading into the playoffs.  The pitching staff is the key and a strong Lincecum is the key to the pitching staff.  If Lincecum struggles and Zito does not overachieve again look for the Giants to look very catchable.
Don't expect too much from him: 
Sergio Romo did not want to be a closer last year, he just kind of worked his way into the job.  The Giants needed someone to replace the injured Brian Wilson an he did such a good job that the Giants did not resign a healthy Wilson.  Romo did not really have time to think about his new position, he just had to adapt.  Now  that he has had time to think about the importance he may or may not be able to repeat the performance.
Expect great things from:
Buster Posey has played two full seasons in the majors.  In 2010 he won Rookie of the Year and the Giants won the World Series.  In 2011 he was injured and missed most of the year with a broken ankle and the Giants missed the playoffs.  In 2012 Posey came back and won an MVP and Silver Slugger award and the Giants again won the World Series.  Posey seems to be in the middle of everything good that happens to the Giants. As long as he's behind the plate the giants have the chance to win.
Time for him to step up:
After winning two of the last three World Series and getting clutch performances from unexpected players it is hard to say anyone needs to step up.
Is this his last chance?:
Tim Lincecum was probably asking whatever happened to loyalty.  The four time All Star, two time Cy Young Award winner and best pitcher in baseball, had an off year.  You could call it a terrible year.  When he finished 10-15 with an ERA above 5.00 he was left out of the playoff rotation and moved to long relief.  It seems like his great contributons to the rebirth of the Giants organization have been forgotten and he will need to have a big season to stay in the rotation.
Prediction:
1st place in NL West

Los Angeles Dodgers

What to expect: 
The Dodgers have a lot of potential and an almost unlimited payroll.  Injuries and questions about who is playing where could lead to a slow start and added pressure.  Dodgers fans should be excited about the future but it may still take them a few years to get the right combination of players to reach the World Series.  Regardless, this team is too talented not to challenge for a Wild Card spot.
Why should you root for these guys?: 
When the Dodgers and Giants are both good at the same time it means the best rivalry in the history of sports is at its best.  This rivalry goes back to the beginning of professioal baseball and has only grown as the years go on.  If things go right for the Dodgers, the northern California-southern California rivalry should be at its most vicious.
Why might this season not turn out like Dodgers fans want?: 
Teams like the Dodgers could go one of two ways:  it could be the greatest collection of talent we have seen in a long time or it could be a train wreck that ends up with players scattered across the league at the trading deadline.  On paper the Dodgers are an All Star team all by themselves.  In reality there are some issues.  Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford, Chad Billingsley and Zack Greinke are already suffering from injuries.  Hanley Ramirez is out for the first two months and now there is the question of whether to move Luis Cruz from thirdbase to shortstop or leave him at third and play Dee Gordon (who for some reason has not impressed the Dodgers managment).  Dee Gordon was moved to the minor league camp on Tuesday so Cruz will be playing mostly at shortstop but that still leaves the question of who will play third?  The pitching rotation somehow has 8 solid starters but no one seems to know who is in the rotation.  The lineup is not quite set as Crawford and Kemp will be playing hur on opening day, Cruz is playing shortstop, or thirdbase or...?  Andre Ethier is constantly mentioned in trade rumors.  The players love Don Mattingly but the ownership has refused to give him an extended contract until he has proven he can get this team deep in the playoffs.  Adding to Mattingly's troubles could be having Mark McGwire as the new hitting coach.  It is hard to imagine two people with more varying philosphies in hitting.  It could lead to mixed signals to players looking for batting help.  The new ownership has spent a ton of money and expects results now. 
Don't expect too much from him: 
Matt Kemp has tremendous talent and should have won the 2011 MVP. The expectations coming into the 2012 season for Kemp were unrealistic.  He had a good season by most players' standards (especially when his injuries are taken into account) but it was considered a disappointment.  Kemp had significant surgery in the offseason.  Expect Kemp to fall somewhere in between the 2011 spectacular season and the 2012 "disappointment".  If the talent around him performs he won't need to reach the 2011 numbers for the team to reach the playoffs.
Expect great things from:
Adrian Gonzales had a rough stay in Boston and was happy to return to Southern California.  He made a big splash in his Dodgers debut but as the season went on his struggles continued.  Gonzales consistently worked on trying to correct his problems himself but finally went to McGwire for help.  He found that he was lifting his head and getting his hands too far out in front in an atempt to hit with more power.  With the work he has put in this year and his natural talent expect Gonzales to return to his San Diego performance level.
Time for him to step up:
A.J. Ellis took over for Russell Martin when Martin moved on to New York.  He took over an underachieving pitching staff.  The staff is now full of veteran, All Star, highly paid pitchers who know what they want to throw. Ellis is still a young catcher who will need to confidently call a game and be able to demand the respect and trust of the veteran pitchers.  If he allows the pitcher to take control and go away from the scouting reports the Dodgers will have a long summer.
Is this his last chance?:
Josh Beckett's stay in Boston started off with great results.  It ended with hard feelings and bad statistics.  There were stories of Beckett being a problem in the clubhouse and having a poor attitude.  Beckett has not shown any of these signs in his short time in Los Angeles and without the pressure of being the ace of the staff he can relax and pitch but if things don't go well, he is old enough that teams may think twice about adding him to ther staff.
Prediction:
2nd Place in NL West (2nd Wild Card)

San Diego Padres

What to expect: 
The common perception is that the Padres have been bad for a long time.  The reality is that it was only six years ago that the Padres lost a one game playoff to the Rockies for the Wild Card spot and only three years since they went into the final two games of the season with a chance to win the division over the eventual World Champion Giants.  This is a different team than the one that nearly won in 2010 but the second half of 2012 certainly got Padres fans excited.
Why should you root for these guys?: 
The Padres are generally considered a baseball graveyard.  A few years ago the typical thought of San Diego was that they were a terrible team and it was a shame that someone as talented as Adrian Gonzalez was wasting his talent.  That season they almost won the division.  Over the next two years, the Padres traded away their talent or lost most of them to free agency.  Yet during the second half of last year, the Padres played great ball.  For the Padres players who stuck around after the near win a few years ago it would be nice to see them overcome the low budget and poor perceptions.
Why might this season not turn out like Padres fans want?: 
The Padres had a very strong second half of 2012 that seemed to imply that Bud Black had the team moving in the right direction.  It is possible that the second half was misleading as the roster does not appear to have the talent needed to compete with the Dodgers and Giants. 
Don't expect too much from him:
Carlos Quentin's career with the White Sox got off to a great start.  He made two All Star teams and finished in the top 5 of MVP voting.  He was traded to San Diego before the 2012 season but suffered with injuries.  Quentin likely won't finish in the top 5 in MVP voting but he should make good contributions to the Padres.
Expect great things from:
Chase Headley had a breakout 2012 season.  He hit 31 Home Runs, nearly doubling his career total, and drove in 115 runs.  Headley seems to have finally figured it all out and will be the leader of this team.  If he repeats his 2012 numbers the Padres may surprise a lot of people.  He may have some trouble getting started as he jammed his thumb and is likely starting the season on the disabled list.
Time for him to step up:
Edinson Volquez showed great promise in his few years in Cincinnati even going 17-6 in 2008 and starting the All Star game.  Since then he has failed to live up to expectations and after his 17 win season he failed to win more than 5 games in any season. When Mat Latos became available, the Reds jumped at the chance.  In San Diego Volquez was spectacular going 11-11 on a losing team.  He needs to be the pitcher he was in 2008 if San Diego wants to challenge for a Wild Card spot.
Is this his last chance?:
Yasmani Grandal came to San Diego from the Reds along with Volquez in the deal that sent Mat Latos to the Reds.  He played in a total of 50 games in 2012 and hit .298 but will miss the first 50 games of the season with a PED suspension.  Manager Bud Black was not secretive about his displeasure over the suspension and the negative impact it had, especially after the positive end to last year. When Grandal comes back he will need to have an impact to make it up to his teammates.
Prediction:
3rd Place NL West

What to expect: 
The Diamondbacks surprised everyone with a division title in 2011.  They disappointed everyone with a poor 2012.  They shocked everyone by trading away Justin Upton.  The Diamondbacks seem to be a team at war with itself and with few established stars.  As the Dodgers and Padres improve and the Giants remain consistent the Diamondbacks will need to figure out what direction they are headed. 
Why should you root for these guys?:
The players on this team have lost their leader and marquee player .  Justin Upton led the team to a playoff appearance in 2011 and very nearly beat the Brewers in the NLDS that year and very nearly won the MVP.  It is unclear what caused the Diamondbacks to sour on Upton but the players left behind are suffering for it. 
Why might this season not turn out like Diamondbacks fans want?: 
The big bat and leader on this team was Justin Upton.  With Upton gone the Diamondbacks will need to get a big performance from a lot of players to pick up the slack.  The biggest problem is the lack of pitching.  Although Ian Kennedy, Brandon McCarthy and Trevor Cahill have potential they all had down years (McCarthy suffered an injury causing him to miss significant time for the A's).  They will need the pitiching staff to reach their potential if they want a chance to get in the playoffs.
Don't expect too much from him: 
Adam Eaton has a total of 22 games in the major leagues.  He is replacing one of the best players in the history of the organization, Justin Upton.  It was announced last week that he will miss 6-8 weeks with an elbow sprain.  Adam Eaton has a lot of potential and could push for a Rookie of the Year award when he returns but an MVP, or Justin Upton type numbers, are out of the question.
Expect great things from:
Martin Prado came to Arizona from the Braves in exchange for Justin Upton.  Prado is a .300 hitter and may not have the power of Upton but he has the speed at the top of the lineup that Arizona needs.  Prado was well respected in the Braves clubhouse and some were not happy to see him go, especially so quickly after Chipper Jones left.  Expect Prado to bring the same leadership to Arizona.
Time for him to step up:
When the Diamondbacks reached the playoffs in 2011, Paul Goldschmidt hit .306 with 30 Home Runs and drove in 94 runs.  In the 5 game NLDS against the Brewers he hit .438 with 2 Home Runs (one of them a Grand Slam) and 6 RBI.  His follow up season was much less impressive.  He hit only .286, drove in only 86 and hit only 20 Home Runs.  With the loss of Upton the team will need Goldschmidt to blossom into the team leader and to lead with his powerful bat.
Is this his last chance?:
Eric Chavez was a star in this league in the early 2000's.  As the Oakland Third Baseman Chavez was a recognizable name and was used in nationwide advertising for the playoffs from 2000-2002.  Back problems slowed his career but he has remained a solid contributor and filled in nicely for the Yankees when Alex Rodriguez was injured last year.  Chavez will not be a starter but will see significant playing time.  Chavez has always been a class act but he may not have many more chances to win a title.

4th Place in NL West

What to expect: 
The Rockies faithful need to have low expectations.  Very low.  Instead of aiming to win a wild card spot they should aim to avoid finishing below the Astros, Marlins and Mets for the worst record in baseball.
Why should you root for these guys?: 
The Rockies are in a truly terrible period of their history.  They have three great players in Troy Tulowitski, Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzales but little else.  Anyone who enjoys rooting for the underdog, here's your team.
Why might this season not turn out like Rockies fans want?: 
Similar to the Astros, Rockies fans need to be realistic.  This is not a good team.  Although they have some talent it is not enough to keep them competitive and if they are blown away with offers for the talent they have don't be surprised to see Tulowitski and Carlos Gonzales in new uniforms by the trading deadline.
Don't expect too much from him:
Carlos Gonzalez caught fire in the second half of the 2010 season and finished the season with a .336 average.  Imagine what that season could have been like for te Rockies if Gonzalez's amazing second half could have been timed with Ubaldo Jimenez's amazing first hhalf.  At any rate, it wasn't and the Rockies had a bad year but Gonzalez was anointed by some as the best hitter in the game and the best hitter for the next era. He has followed up that season with a .295 and a .303 average  Gonzlaez is a great player and if he were playing in a lineup with some better protction he might see some better pitches.  Gonzalez will be a near .300 hitter but don't expect him to be the greatest hitter of the era.
Expect great things from:
Troy Tulowitski was a big reason the team reached the World Series in 2007.  He has been the clear star and fan favorite of the team since then.  Tulowitski is healthy again and should be back to his best after a few down seasons.
Time for him to step up:
Jeff Francis was one of the pitching stars (17-6) of the 2007 World Series team and was expected to continue his excellence  for many years.  Since then he has gone 4-10 (2008), 4-6 (2010), 6-16 (2011 in Kansas City) and 6-7 (2012).  Francis needs to recapture the magic that took the rockies to a surprise World Series appearance.
Is this his Last Chance?:
Todd Helton has been the team's most identifiable player over the history of the franchise.  He is likeTony Gwynn in San Diego, Ken Griffey Jr in Seattle or George Brett in Kansas City.  Helton is the Rockies.  h\He has been their best player but he is now almost 40 and his average dropped to .238 as he played in less than 70 games.  Helton will continue to represent the team with class but he will not likely be hitting .350 any more.  A playoff contending team looking for a strong veteran addition to get over the hump (read Padres, Pirates or A's) may make an offer for Helton at the trade deadline.  It may be his only chance to win.
Prediction: 5th Place in NL West
